Areas in Bhopal - In the days of yore it was the Chowk, which now forms part of the old city. With modern Bhopal, the downtown shifted to the New Market area of TT Nagar, at the base of the Shamla Hills. In many ways downtown of Bhopal is still there. But with the expansion of the city in the more spacious areas near Habibganj Railway Station, MP Nagar, with its more elegant and modern commercial complexes has taken a lot of sheen off the older districts.

The Chowk still retains a lot of its erstwhile flavour with old mosques and havelis, narrow alleys and crowded markets than can induce even the most sedate into a treasure hunt. This is the area to look for traditional Bhopal crafts. The zari craft could be seen in Bhopal city only. Apart from zari work silver jewellery and purses with beadwork also makes the city a very special one for buyers.

The New Market in TT Nagar is modern Bhopal's first attempt at planned development. Wide roads, multi-storey offices and commercial centres and close proximity to power centres of the state have lent it a special status. Many government offices are located here, while many more are just a stone's throw away. Platinum Plaza near TT Nagar market is the first biggest shopping arcade of Bhopal made by Housing Board. Centre Point is another prominent commercial arcade in TT Nagar.

MP (Maharana Pratap) Nagar is where the action is shifting to. Business, entertainment and leisure, are all moving in. And you still haven't much trouble parking your car! Influx of fresh monies in the market is blooming the commercial spaces in MP Nagar. You could find some of the finest three star hotels in MP Nagar apart from city's best Cineplex-Jyoti.

Shamla Hills is the elite district of the city and though not a downtown area in the conventional sense. Overlooking the Upper Lake, the verdant hill was one of the favoured spots for the royalty and the rich. Many of the upper-end hotels, including a heritage property, are located here or in the vicinity. Jehanuma Palace Hotel fall under this category and staying here will transform you into a Nawabi Era. You could also stay at Hotel Lake View Ashoka run by MP Tourism Department. The Lakeside Road is about the most happening place in the evening, when a large number of people come out for a evening's entertainment, strolling and snacking.
