Local Transport in Ahmedabad - Within the city the more favoured mode for commuting is the metered auto-rickshaws, available throughout the city and suburbs. The meters, however, are not updated and correct fare has to be converted from a chart carried in the auto-rickshaw. Roughly, it comes to a little less than 3 times the fare on the meter. There are also taxis available but you will need to book them in advance or at the airport, railway station or from you hotel. These can be booked to stay with you all day, week, or even a month if you'd like. The chauffeur usually understands English and knows the city very well. For using the local buses, knowing some Gujarati is necessary as the routes and numbers are written only in Gujarati.
