How many Days in a Leap Year

The number of days in a year is generally counted on the basis of the time taken by the Earth to complete its one complete revolution of the Sun. But it is a fact that these calculations are not perfect and it’s just an estimation because the revolution of the earth around the Sun is sometimes irregular. There are many calendars found in the world but the most famous one is the Gregorian calendar which is based on the solar year and according to that, the earth takes 365 days to complete its one cycle around the Sun.

These numbers of the days in a year may vary and on average it is calculated as 365.2421897 or 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds. It is commonly known that Earth also revolves around its own axis and when it completes one revolution on its own axis then it is calculated as one day.

Number of Days in a Leap Year

A year with one additional day exists every four years and it is known as a leap year. So, if one extra day is added to the leap year then the total number of days in a leap year will be 366 days.

This happens because a leap year consists of one extra day in the month of February. Normally, a February month has 28 days in a Gregorian calendar but in the leap year, it consists of 29 days. One extra day is added in the February month of the leap year in order to maintain calendars in alignment with the dates they record.

According to the Gregorian calendar, the Earth spent one year completing its revolution around the Sun which is not a full number but it is 365.2425, so in order to put the calendar in synchronization, one extra day is added in the leap year. Without exception, years that are equally divisible by 100 and 400 do not qualify as leap years.

Due to the fact that 2023 is not an integer multiple of 4, it will not be considered a leap year. While 2024 is an integral multiple of 4 and is not evenly divisible by 100, it is a leap year.

On the other hand,  2100 is not categorized as a leap year because it is evenly divisible by 100 but not by 400.

When is the Next Leap Year

The next leap year will be 2024 because it is an integral multiple of 4 and is not perfectly divisible by 100.
