Shaheed Diwas 2025

The assassination of Mahatma Gandhi by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948 and the death of three heroes Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on 23rd March were prompted by a nationwide outburst of mourning that was unsurpassed. The very worst days in the chronology of India’s battle for independence occurred on this day.

When Shaheed Diwas is Celebrated?

On January 30, Martyrs’ Day or Shaheed Diwas is recognized to commemorate the date of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. On March 23, Martyrs Day, also known as Shaheed Divas, is dedicated to memorializing the blood of three noteworthy Indian activists: Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar. 23rd March is remembered yearly to salute the untold country warriors and the freedom warriors who paid the ultimate sacrifice to establish a self-governing, democratic, and liberal India.

How Shaheed Diwas is celebrated?

On the 30th of January each year, the Prime Minister and President of India and other leaders reach Rajghat where the Gandhi ji gravesite is located, and then pay honor to him by offering flowers and garland on his gravesite. Additionally, on 23rd March, the youth parade at various places in India is organized in order to pay honor to the contributions of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev.

Why is Shaheed Diwas Celebrated?

For the purpose of exacting payback for Lala Lajpat Rai’s assassination, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru embraced the liberation movement. On several counts, along with the 1928 shooting of British patrol officers John Saunders, the three male republicans were detained. However, they had no desire to murder John Saunders but  James Scott, the inspector general of police, was their priority since he had urged his army personnel to operate a lathe attack on demonstrators, which ended in Lala Lajpat Rai’s martyrdom. So, in order to pay tribute to the contribution and sacrifice of these three brave heroes of the nation, Indian people celebrate Shaheed Diwas on 23rd March each year.

Significance of Shaheed Diwas

There is a great significance of Shaheed Diwas for the people, especially the young generation of India. On the 23rd of March, Shaheed Diwas gave a clear message to the youth of India that they should dedicate their lives to the betterment of the nation as Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev did. The youth has all those capabilities which are required for making the nation stronger and developed, all they need to recognize and utilize it.

Legend of Shaheed Diwas

When he was still a youngster, Bhagat commenced to campaign against British rule in India and eventually battled for sovereignty. He also engaged in Amritsar as an author and editor for publications in the Punjabi and Urdu languages that had a Socialist slant. He is known for promoting the expression “Inquilab zindabad” (literally, “Long live the revolution”).

Progressive patriots like Bhagat Singh and his colleagues desired a popular uprising of workers and agriculturalists to confront the British government and the wealthy imperialist forces. In 1928 in Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi, they constituted the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) with this vision in mind. Saunders, a policeman who had supervised a lathi strike that burned to death Lala Lajpat Rai, was shot by representatives of the HSRA. The demise of Lala Lajpat Rai on October 30, 1928, during a non-violent campaign against the Simon Commission, had a major influence on Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru.
