Vishwakarma Puja 2023

Vishwakarma Puja is the celebration of the Lord Vishwakarma birthday who is a Hindu deity and known as the creator of this Universe as per Hindu religious texts. Vishwakarma is one of the holy festivals for Indians, especially for business owners and working individuals who commemorate Vishwakarma Day or Jayanti by worshiping Lord Vishwakarma.

In the holy text, it is stated that God Vishwakarma, Brahma’s seventh son, entered the world during Samudra Manthan. In addition to being the Hindu God of engineering and construction, he is also revered as the maker of tools and weapons. In his statue, Vishwakarma is depicted holding the Vedas, a bow, artisanal tools, and a water pot in his four hands. 

When Vishwakarma Puja is worshiped?

Like any other Hindu deity, Lord Vishwakarma has also got a special place in the hearts of Indians, especially for engineers, business owners, craftsmen, architects, and working people in any field. Indian people have the tradition of honoring Lord Vishwakarma on the last day of the Bhadau month according to the Hindu calendar.

The birth anniversary of Lord Vishwakarma falls between 16-18 Sep every year, so the Vishwakarma Jayanti 2023 will be conducted on 17 September on Sunday.

Apart from India, Vishwakarma Jayanti is also celebrated by the Nepalis in Nepal with complete devotion and faith. 

How is Vishwakarma Puja Conducted?

In textile mills, warehouses, and offices, Vishwakarma Jayanti or Puja, which falls in the month of Bhadau, is revered.  First of all, after waking up early in the morning, the people of India take the holy bath and wear new clothes. Then they make a worship stage where Lord Vishwakarma is placed and decorate it with flowers, then light up the oil lamp and burn insane sticks. Afterward, mantras are spoken and then fruits are offered to Lord Vishwakarma. Devotees then worship their pieces of machinery and equipment by offering them flowers, water, and sweets. 

Entrepreneurs, architects, and all other professionals adore Lord Vishwakarma and request him to guard their enterprises, secure their employment, and boost their professional endeavors. Furthermore, workers pray for the proper functioning of various items of hardware and machinery. Not only engineers and builders, but also painters, craftspeople, technicians, metal workers, fabricators, manufacturing workers, and many other individuals remember and show respect to Vishwakarma for all his blessings on the day of Vishwakarma Jayanti. In the industrial district of Haldia in the Indian state of West Bengal, Vishwakarma Puja is celebrated with utmost dedication and is one of the most well-known festivals in the country.

Why is Vishwakarma Puja or Jayanti Celebrated?

According to the Hindu religion, Vishwakarma is a divine architect who constructed the palaces for the Hindu deities and also created this universe. He has also got great knowledge of mechanics and engineering along with architectural skills. People of India and Nepal celebrated or conducted Vishwakarma Puja in order to triumph in their business and professions. It is believed that worshiping and celebrating Vishwakarma Jayanti brings prosperity, safety, and success to one’s business or profession. So, there is a tradition of performing Vishwakarma Day by the industrialists, entrepreneurs, and other working individuals on the occasion of Vishwakarma Day.

Significance of Vishwakarma Puja

There is a great significance of Vishwakarma Puja for the people of India because he is honored as a skilled architect who has also got knowledge of mechanical science in Rig Veda. He not only constructed homes or palaces for the Hindu gods but also designed many divine and holy weapons for the Hindu deities. Some of his major creations of weapons include Lord Indra’s Vajra, Lord Krishna’s Sudarshan Chakra, and many more. He is also credited for building the Dwarka, where Lord Krisha used to reside with their villagers and he also built Pandavas Indraprastha. All these religious facts make him respectful and honored for professionals like architects, engineers, artisans, laborers, and many other professions. 

Legend of Vishwakarma Puja or Jayanti

According to the legend, Lord Vishwakarma built the Golden palace for Lord Shiva and Parvathi.  Once, Lord Shiva asked Raava to perform a puja for their home. When Raavan, who was a fervent follower of Lord Shiva, agreed and reached there and saw the palace of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi, he was amazed by the beauty and became speechless. After the puja, Lord shiva asked Ravana for his desire as a return gift of puja, he asked for Lord Shiva’s palace. Lord Shiva agreed and fulfilled his wish without any hesitation. 

Creation of Lord Vishwakarma

Additionally, Alakpuri, a town on Mount Mandara built by Kubera, is credited to Lord Vishwakarma as its architect. He is also known to be the constructor of Pushpak Viman for Kuber at the request of Lord Brahma. He is the creator of Indraprasth for Pandavas in the era of Mahabharat, the town of Dwarka.
