Areas in Coimbatore - Although the city's profile is changing gradually its status of a textile city is dominant. The city, therefore, in many ways, still represents that culture, where life revolved around the mills and clubs and neighbourhood grocery store. The downtown, valid primarily for the poor, were the gateways - railway and bus stations. But, with the advent of the younger generation, expansion of educational institutions and access to global exposure through media, the picture has started to change. Elegant boutiques, multi-storeyed shopping malls selling global brands have started concentrating in areas most accessible to the multitude. Thus, the rise of Crosscut Road in Gandhipuram, and the adjoining areas of Ramnagar, even though, it still abuts one of the major gateways to be the city, the bus stand. The one kilometer stretch of Crosscut Road has changed in complexion. This is where everyone with a pocket in his/her pants comes to buy and be seen. Some of the dinning out options is also here. The other upcoming area is bound by Avinashi and Race Course Roads. Moreover, the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation has drawn a Rs 3,164 crores city development plan which is all set to change the city's basic infrastructure. The plan includes 24x7 water supply, widening of Avinsahi Road from the existing 30-40 ft to 80 ft, construction of a 10 km stretch of elevated road from Avinashi Road to Metropolitan Road.
