Valentine's Day is popular worldwide, especially in the United States and England. It has its origins in Roman paganism - in the ancient festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration on February 15.Though, the roots of Valentine's Day are also said to lie beyond Lupercalia and are shrouded in various fanciful myths.
The idea of celebrating love on St. Valentine's Day is said to have originated during the Medieval Period, which further became prevalent by the 15th century. Sending little love notes along with flowers, chocolates and candies to one's beloved was a popular trend during this era. These handwritten love notes, known as 'valentines', were symbolised as a token of love.
Today Valentine's Day celebrations go beyond the traditional gifting of love notes, candies, and hand-made valentine cards. Couples go out for romantic dinners, exchange cuddly teddy bear gifts, chocolates and red roses. Shops are bursting with heart-shaped balloons, soft toys, cushions, chocolates, roses, and figurines of Cupid on this day. Overall, Valentine's Day has become commercialized, especially with florists and card shops doing a booming business during this time. However, with due course of time it has also expanded to expressions of affection among relatives and friends.
