Biography of Milkha Singh

Milkha Singh, whenever we think of his name, always makes us remember the Flying Sikh who has taken over everyone's hearts and will be forever remembered. He was the first Indian to bring gold home for the first time and made our country proud in the Commonwealth Games in 1958.

He was the First Indian with four gold medals under his name and had national records for 40years of old age. But, he still didn't leave running and used to run in Marathons. Milkha Singh had also served in the Indian Army. Those were the initial days he was recognized for his ability and further selected in other competitions.

Milkha Singh's career in Sports

His initial career days started when he applied for the Indian Army, but he faced lots of rejection three times but finally got recruited into the mechanical branch in 1952.

Every day there were 500m races for everyone in the camp where he met his coach for the first time, Havildar Guru Dev Singh, who saw his ability in him and supported him in his career throughout the journey. He was the inspiration who asked him to apply for the armed forces.

He came into the limelight when he went to national games at Patiala in 1956. He was recognized when he broke 200 and 400 meters records in the National Games at Cuttak in 1958.

He went to Summer Olympics in Rome held in 1960, but he couldn't win as he lost the Race. Then he went to another Summer Olympics in Tokyo held in 1964.

In 1958 for the first time in history, he bagged gold in the Asian games and Commonwealth Games in the 400 and 200m races, which made his country. So proud as we got our first gold at home, which was a very proud moment for everyone.

It was a do-or-die situation when he had to compete with Pakistan athlete Abdul Khaliq in a 100m race. However, he defeated him in making our country proud in 1962, and from there, he got his name as The Flying Sikh, given by General Ayub Khan.

Nobody thought an ordinary man who was just a 5th pass would make our country proud by getting the first gold for India, and he is always remembered all over the world because of his achievements. Starting from here, he played for Indian, won many medals, and got a good name because of his talent.

After he got many medals and was at the peak of his success, especially when he won gold in 1958, he was promoted from sepoy to junior commissioned officer. Then, after some time, he became the Minister of sports education in Punjab.

He was awarded Padma Shri in 1959 and was honoured with the lifetime achievement award in the second edition of the Indian Sports Honours.

He wrote his autobiography, The Race of My Life, which inspired many people and also told about his struggles during the partition, how he went through it all, and how all this heat and anger for it made him passionate about his sports and worked hard.

He also has Biopic named Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, where his role was played by Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor and was directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. Again, he did fabulous acting and showed us the reality of his struggles.

Milkha Singh has impacted everyone and has always been a role model. But unfortunately, he died on 18 June 2021 due to covid-19, which was a significant loss for our country, but he still remembers him. He even has a wax statute which was created by sculptors of Madame Tussauds in London and was unveiled at Chandigarh in September 2017, and that's how our legend was who was kind-hearted and always had a fire inside to do something and make our country proud and let our youngsters know all you need is confidence in yourself. You can do anything as we say," JAHA CHAHA WAHA RAHA HAI."
