  • Saina Nehwal trained under Pullela Gopichand in his academy and then went on under Prakash Padukone Academy in Bangalore.
  • She won her first international title during the 2005 Asian Satellite Badminton Tournament in India.
  • In 2009, she defeated her countrywoman Aditi Mutatkar to win her first India Grand Prix championship.
  • Her first World Championship was at the young age of 16. Although her opponent, the same year, took her down, she also participated in the World Junior Badminton Championship, making it to the Finals, where she won the runners-up.
  • She won the global junior championship and the Indian national title in 2008. In addition, Nehwal took part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, wherein she advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's singles competition.
  • In 2010, Nehwal earned a gold medal in Commonwealth Games at home in women's single.
  • Nehwal’s current ranking in the world is 33.
